Eugene Fromentin's biography
Painter and writer, born in La Rochelle, W France. As a painter, he is best known for his depictions of the land and people of Algeria, such as Les Gorges de la Chiffa. These themes are found in his writing, Un Eté dans le Sahara (1857) and Une Année dans le Sahel (1858), but he made his mark in literature with his one novel, a typically French masterpiece of psychological analysis, Dominique (1863).
